The 1st International Chemicals Forum organized by the Chemical and Para-chemical Industry Forum, in Rabat on May 17-18, 2023 Morocco, future world chemicals hub



The Chemical and Para-chemical Industry Federation organized the 1st International Chemicals Forum in Rabat, on May 17-18, 2023, in partnership with the Ministry of Industry and Trade, AMDIE, as well as OCP, CGEM, ASMEX, FMIIP, and FMP. Placed under the motto: the emergence of a national industry, one that fosters promising business dynamic and is geared towards a genuine national industrial sovereignty, the works of the 1st Forum are thus perfectly aligned with and in harmony with the spirit of the Message addressed by His Majesty, King Mohammed VI, to the participants in the 1st Edition of the “National Industry Day”: “To succeed, our country needs an integrated industry incorporating new business activities and novel know-how and offering new employment opportunities (in order for it) to fully prepare for the launch of new industrial era, driven by and geared towards the notion of sovereignty.”

This 1st Forum saw the participation of Mr. RyadMezzour, the Minister of Industry and Trade,Mrs. Leila Benali, the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, and all the Kingdom’s professional federations. It was attended by a slew of eminent experts and renowned Moroccan and foreign organizations.

Organized in the form of an interactive platform for the exchange of ideas and experiences, the 1st International Chemicals Forum has allowed the participants to weave and consolidate their business relations, while at the same time, exploring novel prospects of “Win-Win” partnerships at the inter-African and international scales. Structured in the form of plenary sessions with keynotes, reflection panels, and debates, the Chemicals Forum held in Rabat has addressed the main themes and poles of analyses which constitute focal interest areas for professionals, for public actors, as well as for national and international experts.

The opening session of the Forum was marked notably by the address given by the President of the Chemicals and Para-chemicals Federation, Mr. Abed CHAGAR, who surveyed the achievements, the prospects, as well as the challenges facing the sector. He also offered a prospective view of future large-scale actions in the sector.

During the opening session, a number of persons took the floor, includingthe Minister RyadMezzour, The Minister Leila Benali, Mr. ChakibAlj, President of the General Confederation of Enterprises in Morocco (CGEM), and His Excellency, the Ambassador of Germany in Morocco, Mr. Robert Dölger.

Thereafter and number of keynote speakers from different parts of the world took turns to shed light on various aspects of a constantly-changing sector. In this respect, the speakers, each from the perspective of their own areas of activities, shared their expertise with the attendance, which has obviously expanded the scope of the debate and enriched it. This particular part of the Forum was facilitated by renowned experts, notably: Mr. Ali Seddiki, Director General of AMDIE; Mohamed Benchaaboun, Director General of the Mohammed VI Investment Fund, Mr. RachidYazami, expert, researcher, physicist, and electro-chemist; Ms. Juliana HoskenWernek, Vice-President of BASF Africa; Mr. Sami Mainich, President of the Africa Dow Chemicals, as well as representatives of major international chemicals groups, such as Bayer, Air Liquide, P&G …

The panels scheduled for the two-day long forum have centered their reflection and their debates on the following current weighty questions posed within the sector, generally, and more specifically, the following priority themes:

  • What ecosystem for high-performance batteries?
  • Pharmaceutical industry and sanitary sovereignty;
  • Morocco as a world chemicals hub and investment opportunities;
  • Chemicals and human capital: training, R&D, etc.
  • Moroccan chemical industry as an investor in Africa (OCP, Pharmaceuticals, Chemicals);
  • Synergies among industrial federations for an industrial sovereignty;
  • The Chemicals and Para-chemicals Federation opening to the world
