Ireland and Morocco explore opportunities to strengthen ties in aviation and aerospace

Ireland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Leo Varadkar T.D. met with H.E. Ryad Mezzour, Minister for Industry and Trade in the Moroccan Government with the aim of boosting closer working between the two countries’growing aviation and aerospace industries.

The important meeting took place at the ‘Morocco Now’ Pavilion at the Farnborough Air Show in the UK where both Ministers attended to focus on the aviation and aerospace sectors of their respective countries. The Farnborough Air Show is the main show being held globally this year and is expected to attract 80,000 visitors and around 1,000 exhibitors promoting their products and services to global industry players.

The visit to the Air Show by the Irish Deputy Prime Minister formed part of the trade mission organised by Enterprise Ireland – the Irish Government agency for trade and innovation –to promote the strength of the Irish aviation and aerospace sectors.

Welcoming the meeting, Ireland's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Leo Varadkar said:

"The relationship between Ireland and Morocco continues to grow stronger, especially through business and trade investment. The discussion with H.E. Ryad Mezzour, Minister for Industry and Trade, was a great opportunity to discuss further collaboration between Ireland and Morocco, in particular the aerospace supply chain and the role of Irish companies at the forefront of this sector’s innovation. Through greater collaboration between the Irish and Moroccan aerospace industries, we can open the door to mutual benefits and economic opportunities."

Ireland is a proven pioneer in global aerospace and aviation with an incomparable track record of advancing aviation over the last 100 years. With Ireland’s strong reputation for being at the forefront of innovation in the industry, the aerospace and aviation sectors form a major part of the Irish economy worth €4.1bn ($4.12bn USD). With over 250 aviation and aerospace companies in Ireland, providing 42,000 jobs, the industry is a major player in the global market.

Ireland also has exceptional experience in aerospace manufacturing capability, with the Emerald Aero Group (EAG), a cluster of Irish aerospace companies now collaborating together to supply companies in the global aerospace market.

Morocco’s aviation and aerospace sector is also emerging as a strong contender in the market, presenting huge opportunities for Enterprise Ireland client companies. It has doubled over the last decade, grown at a rate of 17% per annum with export revenues of €1 billion, and now employs over 11,000 people with around 200 companies dedicated purely to manufacturing ancillary and spare parts.

Last year, Enterprise Ireland and the Moroccan Agency for Investment and Export Development conducted a week-long series of webinars on ‘Doing Business in Morocco’ to share knowledge. Later this year, a market study visit is expected to take place by Enterprise Ireland colleagues to Morocco tocontinue strengthening relationshipsand engaging with key stakeholders from both the public and private sectors across the ecosystem.
