For the first time in its history, the International Sociological Association (ISA) has selected Africa as the venue for its World Forum of Sociology, scheduled to take place in Rabat from 6th to 11th July 2025. Morocco's capital will thus become the global crossroads for social sciences, bringing together over 4,500 researchers from nearly one hundred countries to explore the theme “Knowing Justice in the Anthropocene.” This event will place Morocco at the very heart of international scientific debate on the critical challenges of our time. Jointly organised by the ISA, Mohammed V University of Rabat, and the Moroccan Sociological Society (IMS), the Forum marks Morocco’s rising recognition as a key academic player. Since its inception in 2008, the ISA Forum of Sociology has established itself as a prime platform for reflection and exchange on major sociological issues. Designed to bridge gaps between the ISA’s World Congresses, it enables the 67 Research Committees and Thematic Groups to further their work within a collaborative framework, whilst preserving their academic independence. The committees originate from working groups which, according to ISA statutes, evolve first into thematic groups before becoming fully-fledged research committees. During the 5th ISA Forum of Sociology, these academic bodies will conduct 1,329 sessions addressing core issues such as socio-environmental inequalities, the role of social sciences amidst contemporary crises, and integrating Southern perspectives into global debates. Professor Mohammed Rhachi, President of Mohammed V University, underscored the significance of this event, stating: "As a co-organising institution, our university reaffirms its position as an academic leader, both within Morocco and internationally. This Forum is a valuable opportunity to highlight the contributions of our researchers and bolster our scholarly standing on the global stage." Professor Rhachi also emphasised the uniqueness of this opportunity, adding: "The Forum will provide an exceptional intellectual and logistical framework conducive to reflection and knowledge sharing on social and environmental transformations." The selection of Morocco to host this major event is attributable to its geostrategic location and cultural openness. Allison Marie Loconto, Vice-President for Research and 5th ISA Forum President, expressed her enthusiasm: "I am delighted to collaborate with the Moroccan Sociological Society (IMS) and Mohammed V University in organising this 5th ISA Forum here in Rabat, a crossroads of civilisations. We anticipate approximately 6,000 sociologists and researchers from 147 countries worldwide, engaging in scholarly debates on how we grasp, and might come to recognise, justice in the age of the Anthropocene." For his part, Abdelfattah Ezzine, National Coordinator of the Moroccan Sociological Society, highlighted the symbolic and epistemological significance of this event: "We regard sociology to be, fundamentally, as an exercise of affirming the power of knowledge when proposing social engineering to the various stakeholders. However, the Moroccan School of Sociology is marked by a dynamism that transcends epistemological, socio-historical, and ideological-cultural constraints at both local and global levels. Hosting the ISA’s World Forum of Sociology represents a commitment to building knowledge that seeks to address the challenges we face as societies, and to responding to the issues that hinder the appreciation of our diversity in striving for another possible world." Beyond its academic content, this event will generate wide-ranging impacts. Firstly, an intellectual impact, as it will establish Rabat as an indispensable hub for sociological reflection. Secondly, at the economic level, the influx of thousands of participants will stimulate the hospitality, catering, and tourism sectors. Finally, on a diplomatic level, the Forum will enhance Morocco’s image as a land of dialogue, complementing an already rich calendar of major events, such as the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) and the co-hosting of the 2030 FIFA World Cup. The Forum's various activities will take place across several iconic venues in Rabat. The opening ceremony will be held at the Mohammed V National Theatre, while academic sessions will primarily be conducted at the Faculty of Educational Sciences and the Faculty of Economic, Legal, and Social Sciences at Madinat Al Irfane. The closing ceremony will take place at the Mohammadia School of Engineers, and a gala dinner is planned at the Sofitel Rabat, marking the culmination of an intensive week of intellectual exchanges. Additionally, the Sociological Film Festival, organised for the first time as an integral component of both the ISA Forum and Congress, will be held at the National Institute of Statistics and Applied Economics. Spearheading this initiative, the IMS welcomes this unprecedented integration into the history of the ISA, thereby enriching the event with a cultural and artistic dimension. This event promises to be a pivotal moment, for both global sociology and Morocco’s international standing. Through the numerous exchanges and debates it will generate, the Forum will be a decisive step in North-South dialogue, amidst the urgent issues of our time. In the words of the organising committee, "Rabat 2025 will be a historic moment for global sociology, where perspectives from the South and North will intersect to foster a deeper understanding of the challenges facing our planet."
